During the time that I have been working on my Mythbuster project, I have learned that there is much more than meets the eye with working behind the scenes in the school system. Most of the time, all the effort that is put into the school system is about the lesson plans and how to get the most out of the class time. Don’t get me wrong, that is an extremely important aspect of it, as it should be, but there is also other factors that you have to take in account. To have a healthy mind, you have to have a healthy body and healthy habits. For this project, I researched the healthy aspect of it with the food system and the physical education. It is very important for the children to have to chance to get healthy foods while at school so that it can fuel their minds for learning. It is also important for them to be able to get physical activity in throughout the day, so that they have a chance to give their minds a break while also working on their overall well-being.

With dealing with the school system it can be a very in depth and touchy subject. The government plays a huge role and it can be challenging to have a conversation about it with trying not to step on anyone’s toes. With this topic one can go one forever with doing research and learning. One of the main questions that I have left is “Why are the budget cuts used on stuff that should be obviously necessary for healthy children such as the food and physical exercise?” Of course this is a question that is not easily answered. If I continued the research I would just dig deeper as to what would be an easy way to incorporate the “healthy” aspect into the budget cuts.

In the school systems the aspect of food is not the only thing that is important when considering the health of a child. People also need to take in account that exercise and movement is equally important for children. I know this serves as true for me, but there is only so much sitting and being quiet that a child can do in a period of time. It is necessary for the children to get up and take a break throughout every school day. This is typically when “P.E” classes come into effect. If you were to ask adults or students in college what their P.E. classes were like in elementary school, most likely the answer would be, “It was just an entertainment class, or it was just used to babysit and give the children a scapegoat to burn off their energy.” This is just how it was for me growing up. P.E. classes would just be a glorified babysitting service where the coaches would just let the children run around and do whatever they pleased. There are the kids (mostly boys) who would run around full force while the others (mostly girls) would just sit around and watch.

It is very important to have structured physical education classes for the betterment of the health of the children. But, because of the budget cuts in the school systems, the first of the classes to be cut is typically the physical education classes. With this comes the greater increase of obesity in children. Obesity affects the child’s social life and it also affects their learning. This is something that is overlooked but can be easily prevented. If the budget cuts were applied to things that were not necessary and the physical education classes were left in the everyday routine, then the physical well being of the child would be significantly better. With the combination of healthier food plans and structural physical education classes, children would not only improve their mental, physical and emotional health, but they would also improve their learning abilities.

For my mythbusters project I decided to look into the topic of food in the school systems. There are so many different directions and paths that one could research for this topic, but I am going to mainly focus on the question, “should schools be able to control the amount and types of food that students receive, and does it really help the students health?”

I know that it is always a sticky topic when you bring up the government, but there is just no away to avoid it when it comes to the school system. For as long as I can remember there has always been laws passed that require the school system to do different things. Michelle Obama decided that she was going to try to reduce childhood obesity by requiring the school system to make major changes within the lunchroom. The school systems were required to take away the fried foods, the soft drinks, and only allow sweet foods occassionally. It was a great attempt on her behalf, however there is always going to be people unhappy. The question that everyone wants to know, is how much is it actually helping the students.

I recently read this article that talks about how the government is even going to the extreme as to control the billboards and signs that are put up around the school that might advertise unhealthy foods. Yes, the schools have the option to not participate in the government regulations, but if they opt out of participating then they lose all of the government funding. With coming from a private school that did not have any government funding, I know how hard it is to financially support a running school. It takes a lot of effort and time to raise enough money to run a school. So, even though the schools get an option on participating or not, it still limits their decision because of the financial reasons.

Tuesday in class, Nadine Cohen came to visit to inform us about all of the helpful tips the UGA library can offer. She went through a detailed description about how we can access the UGA library from home, which will make research so much easier. She also showed us how we can use Galileo to find articles for our Mythbusters project. I have used Galileo numerous times for research papers, but I have never known how to narrow down my search for specific things.

Since this class is based for preparing us to be a teacher in classroom setting, ERIC is a great tool for us to use. It was created by the US Department of Education, and It contains numerous peer articles, reports, and state/local school articles. By using ERIC it will help eliminate all of the other articles that will not be helpful during my project that is dealing with the food system in schools. Mrs. Cohen also showed a helpful tip about searching for an article. She showed us different ways that you could put your topic in the search box to make the search more related to your topic. Since I am dissecting the food system in schools, it will help my search go more smoothly by eliminating the articles.

For my Mythbusters project, Galileo will help out a lot for me to find articles about food in the education system. There are many articles online that is related to my topic, however it is mainly opinion based and is not very credited. With all of the new tricks that Mrs. Cohen showed us, I will be able to find credible articles that will help for my project. I had no idea how many different directions I could turn with my topic, but by researching Galileo I found so many interesting aspects that I can link to my project.
